Citizen Cain is a British progressive rock band .
history
Cyrus (bass, vocals) and Gordon Feenie (drums, flute) formed the band in 1982 in London , soon followed by guitarist Tim Taylor. The band name does not come from the movie Citizen Kane , but from Kain , the son of Adam and Eve .
In the beginning there were many concerts and some studio recordings. The sound was more rhythmic than melodic because of the lack of a keyboard player. There were no major successes. After Cyrus injured his hand in an accident and was unable to play for a long time, the band split up in 1988.
In 1990 Cyrus met his old friend and guitarist Frank Kennedy, who had written some pieces with his friends Stewart Bell (drums, keyboards) and Dave Elam (bass). Drummer Chris Colvin completed the line-up, also known as the Citizen Cain MkII .
In 1991 a positively received demo was released, a year later the debut album Serpents in Camouflage on the Dutch prog label SI . This was followed by appearances as support for bands such as Pendragon , The Enid and Final Conflict and finally further line-up changes: Alistair MacGregor came as guitarist and brought along the new drummer Nick Arless. Andy Gilmour became the new bass player. In this line-up, the second album Somewhere But Yesterday was recorded, which was released in 1994.
After various departures, the third album was recorded as a threesome, the fourth even as a twosome (Cyrus / Bell). In addition, their label SI went bankrupt, but they quickly found a new partner in Cyclops . Phil Allen added to the band for Playing Dead in 2003 . With this line-up, the last album Skies Darken was released in 2012 .
style
The style is assigned to the Retro-Prog , sometimes also the Neo-Prog . The sound is reminiscent of bands like the early Genesis or Marillion , especially because the voice of Cyrus is very similar to the ex-Genesis singer Peter Gabriel .
