The Enid is a British rock band that was formed in 1974 and continues to this day (2013) with interruptions. They are assigned to progressive rock .

history

The Enid was founded in 1974 by Robert John Godfrey , Stephen Stewart and Francis Lickerish. Over time there have been a number of line-up changes, with Godfrey being the only permanent member of all line-ups to be the head of the group.

In 1976 her first album In the Region of the Summer Stars was released , while punk stirred up the rock scene. Undeterred, The Enid released three more albums by 1980, but the big commercial breakthrough did not materialize. After that, Pye Records, which had released albums number three and four, went bankrupt.

Godfrey and Stewart then retired to Suffolk, where they opened the Lodge Recording Studio. Her clients included Kim Wilde , who recorded her first album and hit Kids in America with The Enid as a band in 1981 .

In 1983, The Enid returned as an independent band after radio host Tommy Vance played live recordings of the group on Radio 1 in 1979. The album Something Wicked This Way Comes was the band's first album that was not only recorded instrumentally. Godfrey and Stewart had also developed a new method of financing, a kind of crowdfunding . And they founded their own label, on which they published their current recordings as well as their earlier, partially revised albums, but also live recordings from 1979 at the Hammersmith Odeon . They also had selected other artists such as Glen Baker and William Arkle as customers.

In 1988 the album The Seed and the Sower was released under the name "Godfrey and Stewart", no longer "The Enid". In November of that year there were two farewell concerts that were published as Final Noise . After that, Godfrey and Stewart worked on their respective projects separately. Godfrey moved to Northamptonshire with the Lodge Studio .

But Godfrey soon began to experiment with new band structures. When he named one of these newcomer bands "The Enid", disappointed fans burned their Enid T-shirts when they performed. Another band name was "Come September", under which some titles were released.

In 1994 the time was ripe: a new Enid album, Tripping the Light Fantastic , was released, which was followed by several more.
