Jim Matheos and John Arch

A Twist of Fate is the only solo EP by the American singer John Arch . It was released on Metal Blade Records in 2003 .

Creation and publication

After Fates Warnings Awaken the Guardian , Arch left the band in November 1986 and turned his back on music. As a guitarist Jim Matheos of Fates Warning in early 2002 (u. A. With Mike Portnoy ) on the debut album of OSI worked, he contacted his former bandmates Arch to ask him for participation in the project. Arch, who had not been in the music business for 16 years, declined, but came back to Matheos a little later and had in the meantime started to write two pieces. Portnoy offered his services as a drummer, as bassist Joey Vera was invited by Fates Warning. Two tracks for an EP were recorded at Matheos' studio in New Hampshire in the summer of 2002 .

Title list and style

  1. Relentless - 12:23
  2. Cheyenne - 15:36

A Twist of Fate is stylistically reminiscent of Awaken the Guardian , but sounds more modern. So it is to be assigned to Progressive Metal : The pieces are complex, there are many breaks and unusual melodies. John Arch sings in his usual high voice.

reception

The EP was extremely well received by the press. Dennis Egbers from Baby Blue Pages says: John Arch “sings like a young god - probably even better than ever before - and the songs are anything but bad from bad parents. […] Conclusion: BUY !!! "Thorsten Gürntke sums up:" Personally, I would not have expected such a good EP. [...] Anyway, I'm thrilled and I'll probably unpack the air guitar again. "Boris Kaiser from Rock Hard thinks," [t] he material requires [...] some concentration, rewards brave listeners "and" [a] uf once feels you look back 17 years younger, and when John unpacks his famous extravagant melodies, you suddenly think that sometime, somewhere still'll be fine. "The eclipsed magazine took A Twist of Fate initially less euphoric because it is not always" like all of a piece ”, but then listed it years later in his list of 50 Progmetal milestones.
