Morbid Visions is the debut album by the Brazilian metal band Sepultura . It was recorded in 7 days with 16 tracks in August 1986 at the Estúdio Vice Versa, Belo Horizonte , and released on LP that same year. From 1991 the album was re-released several times together with Sepultura's contribution to the split LP Século XX / Bestial Devastation with Overdose under the title Morbid Visions / Bestial Devastation , whereby the unison of the original LP version taken from Carl Orff's Carmina Burana was omitted, so that the re-release begins with the title song of the original pressing.

Style and texts

Unlike the recordings for Bestial Devastation , the band wasn't completely inexperienced at the time of recording; the songs are faster and, in Max Cavalera's opinion, better written and played than on the predecessor, and he also rated the production as better. The music is raw, primitive and aggressive and has been described in reviews as both death metal and black-metal- influenced Thrash metal and compared to Sodom and Kreator . The drums are dominant in sound.

The texts, in plain, grammatically incorrect English, relate to satanism and war. Max Cavalera stated that the inspiration for the songs came mainly from books on black magic , and answered yes to the question of whether Sepultura sees itself as a satanic band. Satanism is the best subject for a death metal band, he loves to study witchcraft and the like, and leaves other subjects like politics to the punks . Due to insufficient knowledge of English, the band had to translate the texts word for word from Portuguese .

Reviews

Metalion wrote in Slayer - Fanzine , Bestial Devastation was already "a really brutal product", and the music had become since then faster and harder. According to Spiritech from the e-zine PyroMusic.net , it would be easy to tear up Sepultura's early work, among other things because of the production and the often silly lyrics. The fact that the band was still in a development phase could, however, be ignored due to their noticeable enthusiasm. Martin Loga from Powermetal.de emphasized that this music is not for “fans of aesthetic metal music” and “can only bring joy to those who appreciate albums like Sodom's In the Sign of Evil and Kreators Endless Pain .
