Schizophrenia is the second studio album by the Brazilian metal group Sepultura . It was released as an LP in 1987 by the record label Cogumelo Records in Brazil.
Genre
Guitarist Andreas Kisser said that when he joined Sepultura in 1987, he “brought in some new influences - traditional heavy metal and a slightly more melodic style. It was an instant spiritual meeting. We understood where everyone came from musically and could find a way to combine all of our influences so that the music worked. ”(“ ... brought in some new influences - traditional heavy metal and a more melodic style. It was an immediate meeting of minds. We understood where each other was coming from musically and we knew we could find a way to put all our influences together and make the music work. ")
reception
At the time of publication, the band, like its predecessor Morbid Visions, had to take some bitter criticism from the European metal press, including from Rock Hard magazine . The "bad sound" of the record was criticized.
Eduardo Rivadavia from Allmusic gave the album 4 out of 5 stars and praised the fact that Sepultura had introduced “a completely new sound” on the album Schizophrenia , which combined Thrash Metal and Death Metal (“introduced an entirely new sound fusing thrash and death metal”) . Insurrection from Sputnikmusic rates the album as much more polished than the debut album.
The album brought Sepultura the breakthrough. In Brazil 10,000 albums were sold and Sepultura was able to play concerts in front of 2,000 fans each evening. The LP also sold worldwide. This led to the fact that the group was able to sign a contract with the New York record label Roadrunner Records in 1988 .
