Roots is the sixth studio album by the Brazilian thrash metal band Sepultura . It was released on February 19, 1996 by Roadrunner Records and was the last one before the separation from singer Max Cavalera at the end of 1996. In addition to Brazilian rhythms and percussion , progressive and hardcore elements were increasingly used . The album received many positive reviews, but also met with some criticism. It reached in at least seven countries, including the USA and the UK , Gold status . The record is one of the 1001 albums You Must Hear Before You Die , "1001 albums that you have to hear before you die".

Origin and style

In early 1995, the band made no longer break after the Chaos AD tour in Phoenix , Arizona , to the songwriting for the next album. Seven pieces had been finished by summer. Already at this point it was planned to record some drum and percussion parts in the jungle in the north of Brazil, as this environment would "simply bring the right vibes". This was actually implemented, the album contains some samples with Indian chants and percussion parts. A total of 19 tracks were recorded from October to December 1995 with producer Ross Robinson in Malibu , California . Andy Wallace mixed the record. Max Cavalera said of the recordings:

“In any case, we feel even closer as a band, the songs are simpler, straighter and more clearly influenced by the old HC. Roots has z. B. only two riffs ; in the past we sometimes put a whopping 20 in a single song. Some tracks sound like mantras , there is something hypnotic about them. Igor does a lot of tribal drumming. (...) Our Brazilian roots are more recognizable than ever. "

- Max Cavalera

Percussionist Carlinhos Brown can be heard on the songs Rattamahatta , Dictatorshit and Endangered Species , and he also wrote the first. The song Itsári and the 13-minute hidden track were recorded with members of the Xavante Indian tribe. Jonathan Davis from Korn and Mike Patton from Faith No More contributed vocals to Lookaway . The text of Attitude was Max Cavalera's stepson Dana Wells, whose later death was part of the argument at Max Cavalera's separation from the band, involved. As cover pieces, Procreation (of the Wicked) by Celtic Frost and War by Bob Marley were recorded, but they were not included on the album. These tracks were released in 1997 on Blood-Rooted and later on the bonus CD Roadrunner Records: The 25th Anniversary Series . This also featured the song Mine , the text of which deals with the separation of property in marriage and was written by Mike Patton. As singles were Roots Bloody Roots , Attitude and Rattamahatta decoupled.

In 2005, Visions magazine placed Roots at 150th place in its "150 albums for eternity". Andreas Kohl wrote in the magazine that Sepultura is “no longer about speed, no longer about pushing metal boundaries, but about tearing them down, using influences and breaking new ground”. He spoke of a “masterpiece of organic roots processing” and described the “attempt to musically deal with traditional roots” as a success. The record was one of the “beauties of the issue”. In Rock Hard , Frank Albrecht found himself faced with a "conflict". On the one hand, "great ideas are immortalized" on the album, on the other hand the band loses its identity "here and there". He awarded 7.5 out of ten points and called Roots "a good record, nothing more". However, there were also other voices in the editorial team. Hanno Kress spoke of a “clean masterpiece”, “which, however, does not generate unanimous enthusiasm in the metal guild”. Editor Truhe from metal.de criticized Roots more sharply: He called it “full of new ideas”, but musically it is “a step backwards”. The rating was five out of ten points. On allmusic .com however, wrote Steve Huey, Roots had the position of Sepultura as "perhaps most formative" metal band established in the 1990s. It awarded four and a half stars out of five.
