Against is the seventh studio album by the Brazilian thrash metal band Sepultura . It was released on October 6, 1998 by Roadrunner Records and was the first after the separation from singer Max Cavalera in late 1996.

Origin and style

As with Roots , the band integrated some tribal influences into their music. As with its predecessor, a number of prominent guest musicians took part. The Japanese drum ensemble Kodō contributed percussion elements to the piece Kamaitachi . An edited version of it, Diary of a Drug Fiend with vocals by Mike Patton , was taken off the album at the last minute because of concerns about the lyrics.

The title track as well as Choke - for which there was also a music video - and Tribus appeared as singles. The video for Choke showed material from the concert Barulho Contra Fome ( Noise Against Hunger ), the first appearance of the Against tour. As with Roots, the Xavante Indian tribe also participated in this . Also featured are Mike Patton, Jason Newsted , Carlinhos Brown , great guitarist Jairo Guedz and Coffin Joe . In 1999 the band accompanied Metallica on their South America tour.

reception

Steve Huey from Allmusic wrote, "even if it's somewhat disappointing compared to the group's best work, it's much better than one might hope, and there are enough flashes of the old Sepultura brilliance to suggest that great things are still to come." While the album is a bit disappointing compared to the group's best albums, it is a lot better than expected, and the old Sepultura brilliance flashes enough to suggest that great things are yet to come. " awarded three out of five stars.
