Paul Gray (musician, 1972)
Paul Dedrick Gray (born April 8, 1972 in Los Angeles , California , † May 24, 2010 in Urbandale , Iowa ) was an American musician . He became known as the bass player for the nu-metal band Slipknot .
Life
Gray moved to Des Moines, Iowa at a young age. Before he and Shawn Crahan ( percussion ), Anders Colsefini ( vocals until 1997), Donnie Steele ( lead guitar until 1996) and Kun Nong ( rhythm guitar until 1995) Slipknot started playing, he in the band Vexx ( 1989-1991). In 1993 the death metal band BodyPit followed . In this he played until 1995 together with Mick Thomson (guitar), Donnie Steele (guitar), Danny Spain (drums) and Anders Colsefini (vocals). He was also briefly a member of the grindcore band Anal Blast.
Gray was found dead by a hotel employee on May 24, 2010 at 10:50 am local time in his hotel room at the TownePlace Suites in Urbandale . The cause of death was initially unclear, and an initial autopsy was inconclusive . A subsequent toxicological examination revealed that an overdose of morphine and fentanyl in combination with an existing heart disease had caused death. Slipknot presented themselves together with Gray's brother and widow on May 25, 2010 at a press conference. All members of the band appeared unmasked.
On August 17, 2010, 85 days after Gray's death, his widow Brenna gave birth to their daughter October Dedrick Gray. This means that she has the same middle name as her father, who previously died.
On September 5, 2012, Gray's doctor, Daniel Baldi, was charged with eight negligent manslaughter in Des Moines. He is said to have prescribed excessive doses of pain medication to his patients, which eventually led to their death. The remaining band members expressed their concern and indignation in a statement on the Slipknots website that the doctor must be given a just punishment. On August 3, 2014 it was announced that the widow Brenna had failed in her indictment. Nothing is known about other procedures.
Trivia
When Gray started at Slipknot, he wore pig masks. Since the third album Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses) he used a mask reminiscent of Hannibal Lecter . These masks are a Slipknot trademark.
Paul's nicknames within the band and for his fans were Balls and The Pig . The latter was created because of its pig mask. He was also left-handed and therefore played a left-handed bass (Ibanez PGB1L). In early 2011 Ibanez brought out the PGB2T Paul Gray Tribute Bass, on the front of which a picture of Gray and the band logo of Slipknot is painted. In June 2003, Paul was arrested for carrying marijuana , cocaine and driving a car while under the influence of drugs.
The album .5: The Gray Chapter , released on October 17, 2014, is dedicated to him.
