All Hope Is Gone ( English for All Hope Is Gone ) is the fourth official studio album by the US metal band Slipknot . It was released in the United States on August 20, 2008 and was also released across Europe from August 22.

The album was released in two editions and was jointly produced by music producer Dave Fortmann and Slipknot. The results of their work include the singles Psychosocial and Dead Memories. The former was nominated for various internationally known music awards, including the MTV Video Music Award and the Grammy .

Stylistically, it continues the musical path of its predecessor Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses) and varies between more metal- heavy and quieter rock ballads, which was received differently by critics. It reached number 1 in the charts in nine countries.

Emergence

The band began preparations for the 2007 album production. In February 2008, Slipknot and album producer Dave Fortman moved to Sound Farm Studio in Iowa. This makes All Hope Is Gone the band's first album to be written and recorded in their home town of Iowa. Bassist Paul Gray justified this with the fact that there was too much distraction when recording their previous albums in Los Angeles. The band members found it beneficial to be closer to their families; Singer Corey Taylor had the opportunity to visit his son every evening. Another difference to the three previous productions was that all nine band members were involved in the writing process; this later resulted in more than 30 pieces. Corey Taylor had some difficulties with the writing process, but realized that previous album recordings had been difficult and that this had encouraged her creativity. Guitarist James Root and drummer Joey Jordison wrote the song “Sulfur” in just one evening. Taylor and Root played keyboards with DJ Sid Wilson and Shawn Crahan worked on experimental material. None of the experimental songs that were recorded made it onto the album. One of them ("'Til We Die") was released on the special edition of the album. The record was eventually mixed by Colin Richardson .

Looking back on the production of All Hope Is Gone , the band members had different opinions. Guitarist Root was partially disappointed by the producer of the album Dave Fortman and commented with reference to the producer of the previous album Rick Rubin : “[…] Dave Fortman helped me to appreciate the abilities of Rick Rubin as a producer. He [Fortman] was not able to bring nine people under one roof and for me that is the most important thing in the production of a Slipknot album. [...] "

In contrast, Joey Jordison praised Dave Fortman and described All Hope Is Gone as the band's best album in his opinion.

background

Music genre

Before the release, some band members expressed an interest in making the heaviest album yet. Joey Jordison predicted, “The album will be harder than the previous one; but just as crazy and experimental. "

On All Hope Is Gone stylistic way of its predecessor Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses) continued. Already there were fewer influences of death metal and other extreme varieties of metal to be heard than it had been the case on Iowa . In addition to some aggressive titles, more experimental pieces and softer rock songs, including acoustic guitar solos, are included. Thus showing All Hope Is Gone parallels to James Roots and Corey Taylor's side project Stone Sour . Examples of this are the two songs Dead Memories and the power ballad Snuff .

Slipknot also shows similarities to other bands on this album, for example in the song Gematria (The Killing Name) for Machine Head . Overall, All Hope Is Gone is more in the direction of alternative rock .

Meaning of the songs

All Hope Is Gone covers a variety of political issues. The intro “.execute.” ( Eng .: “Execute, execute”) is Corey Taylor's response to Spiro Theodore Agnew's speech to protesters against the Vietnam War ; and the following title "Gematria (The Killing Name)" continues this theme.

According to Taylor, "Wherein Lies Continue" is directed against "any civilization in which the leaders have achieved an arrogance in which they think they can speak for the people". In the song "Butcher's Hook" (German: "Metzgerhaken") the similarity between the members of the Emo subculture is discussed.

In addition to political content, topics such as anger and obsession are also covered; the music industry is also criticized on All Hope Is Gone . In retrospect, front man Corey Taylor repeated his testimony in this regard; so he blamed the record labels for illegal music downloads on the Internet. In Kerrang magazine, Taylor said, "It [All Hope Is Gone] wouldn't be a Slipknot album if I didn't speak my mind about the music industry."

tour

Slipknot performing during the Mayhem Festival

To promote All Hope Is Gone , Slipknot started the "All Hope Is Gone World Tour" on July 9, 2008. It contained a total of 153 appearances and was divided into nine sections. Due to several injuries to band members during the tour, a number of concerts had to be postponed or canceled.

The tour began on July 9, 2008 in Auburn, Washington state as part of the first stage, the "Mayhem Festival", which included performances in the US and Canada. Slipknot were accompanied by the groups Disturbed , DragonForce and Mastodon , among others . During the first concert in Auburn, DJ Sid Wilson broke both heels when he wrongly landed after jumping from an elevated platform. As a result, the second gig in Marysville (California) had to be postponed for three days. On July 12, 2008, Slipknot were able to reappear with Wilson in a wheelchair and his legs in plaster casts.

As the tour continued, Slipknot was accompanied by Machine Head. The "All Hope Is Gone World Tour" included appearances at Rock am Ring and Rock im Park as well as numerous other festivals. Drummer Jordison broke his ankle, as a result of which four concerts in Europe had to be canceled. Due to further injuries and family problems, the band's first ever concert in Israel had to be canceled.

The tour concluded with a concert on October 31, 2009 at the Trinity of Terrors in Las Vegas.

Reviews

All Hope Is Gone received various reviews from critics. In particular, critics disagreed about the right balance between heavier, more metal-heavy songs and ballads. The US website Metacritic calculated a score of 68 from 14 professional reviews with a maximum of 100 points; and was accordingly rated as “generally good” according to the site's rating system.

Michael Edele from Laut.de was positive about the CD and rated a lot of the songs as good. He was also not dissatisfied with the pronounced similarities to bands like Machine Head in pieces like Gematria (The Killing Name) or Stone Sour in the song Dead Memories , whose chorus gets "under your skin". Moritz Grütz from the online metal magazine Metal1 describes something similar; "Slipknot have mastered the balancing act between returning to old values and further development". Matthias Weckmann from Metal Hammer magazine awarded full marks and wrote:

"If the debut was the great musical sensation, Iowa the sheer aggression and Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses the stylistic revolution, the new work is now the mix of all these elements - in perfection"

- Metal Hammer , 7 out of 7 points

Michael Rensen from Rock Hard magazine also described the songs as first class. However, he complains that the “rampant slipknot madness” that was equally present on the predecessor is missing.

One of four reviews of the online magazine Metal.de and Plattentests.de also found this conflict rather negative; Dennis Droggemüller from Plattentests.de rated All Hope Is Gone with five out of ten points worse than the two previous albums and drew the conclusion: "Slipknot have delivered a solid, but still their weakest album."

Music videos and singles

So far, five singles have been released from All Hope Is Gone and four music videos have been shot.

Two months before the release of their new studio album, on June 20, 2008, Slipknot released the title song for the album as a single for promotional purposes. The single was one of the last tracks recorded for the album of the same name and is counted among the heavier tracks on the album. In addition to the chart placement in the British charts, All Hope Is Gone also entered the Swedish charts. The next single was the song Psychosocial on June 26, 2008 released. This entered the charts in seven countries and stayed there for up to eight weeks. The album's first music video was also shot for Psychosocial ; it was made near Jamaica, Iowa, where the album was recorded. It was the first and only video in which the band wore the new masks and also the so-called "purgatory masks". It was also nominated for the 2008 VMAs in the “Best Rock Video” category. The song was played live for the first time at the beginning of their "All Hope Is Gone World Tour" on July 9th in Auburn .

After the music video for Dead Memories was released on October 25, 2008, the song was released on December 1, 2008 as the third single. It reached number 3 on the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks , making it the band's most successful track in this hit parade to date. Stylistically, Dead Memories is one of the quieter songs on All Hope Is Gone next to Snuff . Dead Memories also has parallels to Metallica's Enter Sandman .

The track Sulfur was released on June 15, 2009, just under a year after the album was released, as the fourth single. The accompanying music video for the song was shot on March 9, 2009, two days before the end of their American tour, near Los Angeles. After a 30-second preview had already been shown on MTV, the music video was released on April 18, 2009. The single is also part of the soundtrack for the video game MotorStorm: Pacific Rift .

The ballad Snuff , which was released on September 28, 2009, was selected as the fifth single .

Special edition

The “Special Edition” of the album contains three additional bonus tracks, a 40-page booklet with photos of the band members and DVD nine: The Making of All Hope Is Gone , on which the creation of All Hope Is Gone is documented.
