Drimia arenicola is a plant of the genus Drimia in the family of asparagaceae (Asparagaceae). The specific epithet arenicola is derived from the Latin words arena for 'sand' and -cola for 'inhabiting' and refers to the preferred habitat of the species.

description

Drimia arenicola is a geophyte . Its fleshy onion scales, loosely arranged like roof tiles, are ovate-lanceolate. They are 10 to 30 millimeters long and 5 to 15 millimeters wide. Their tips are pointed. The upright leaves are thread-like.

The upright inflorescence reaches a length of 5 to 15 centimeters. The panicle is loose. The membrane-like, egg-shaped-triangular, pointed bracts are up to 2 millimeters long and 1.5 millimeters wide. The bell-shaped flower shell has a length of up to 4 millimeters. Their dirty white, elliptical, blunt tepals have grown together. They have a length of 4 millimeters and are 2 millimeters wide. The anthers are up to 1 millimeter long. The ovoid ovary has a length of up to 2.5 millimeters. The bloom time is in late spring and early summer.

The egg-shaped-spherical fruits are up to 5 millimeters long. They contain elongated, glossy black, wrinkled seeds up to 4 millimeters in length.

Systematics and distribution

Drimia arenicola is widespread in the South African province of Northern Cape in the Succulent Karoo .

The first description as Rhadamanthus arenicola by Rune Bertil Nordenstam was published in 1970. John Charles Manning and Peter Goldblatt put the species in the genus Drimia in 2000 .
