Hasan Minhaj ( ˈhʌsən ˈmɪnhɑːdʒ ; born September 23, 1985 in Davis , California ) is an American stand-up comedian , writer, producer, political commentator, actor and television presenter. He is best known for his Netflix show Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj ; he has received two Peabody Awards and two Webby Awards for his work. He was best known for his role on The Daily Show from 2014 to 2018. In 2017 he was the keynote speaker at the White House Correspondents' Dinner . He was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time .

Life

Family and education

Hasan Minhaj comes from a Muslim family originating from Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh ( India ). His parents, Najme and Seema (nee Usmani), migrated to Davis , California , where Minhaj was born and raised. After his birth, he and his father, a chemist, stayed in the United States while his mother returned to India to complete a medical education. In 1989 she stayed again for a short time in the USA, where Hasan Minhaj's sister was born.

Hasan Minhaj graduated from the University of California, Davis with a degree in Political Science in 2007 .

In addition to English , he speaks fluent Hindi and Urdu .

In January 2015 he married Beena Patel, a Hindu . On April 22, 2018, the couple had their first child, a girl. The family lives in New York City .

Professional career

He became interested in comedy while in college after watching Chris Rock's Never Scared as the first stand-up special. He commuted to San Francisco to perform. Minhaj cited Kevin Shea , W. Kamau Bell, and Arj Barker as inspiration for his art.

In 2009, Minhaj moved to Los Angeles to perform Stand-up for Diversity on the NBC show , where he made it to the finals. In 2011 he appeared on the State of Georgia television series and played various roles on the MTV show Disaster Date (hidden camera). In 2013, Minhaj had guest roles on Arrested Development and Getting On .

On November 19, 2014, Minhaj joined The Daily Show as a presenter . His first performance was about a discussion on Islam between Ben Affleck and Bill Maher .

On April 29, 2017, Hasan Minhaj was the keynote speaker at the White House Correspondents' Dinner , traditionally addressing Washington, DC society , statewide politics, current events, the current president, the White House Press Corps and the US media Took shovel. He criticized US President Donald Trump for boycotting the dinner by calling him a "liar in chief" and reminded the press to do their job.

Minhaj's one-man performance Homecoming King made its debut on Off-Broadway in October 2015. The central element of the show was the experiences of immigrants in the USA today, illustrated with stories from Hasan Minhaj's life as a first-generation Indian-American Muslim. He later turned the show into his first stand-up special, called Hasan Minhaj: Homecoming King , which premiered on Netflix on May 23, 2017 . The special was recorded in January 2017 at Minhaj's Alma Mater, University of California, Davis . He received a Peabody Award for this contribution .

In March 2018, Netflix announced that Hasan Minhaj would host its own weekly show on the platform. The show, titled Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj , premiered on October 28, 2018 and was initially designed for 32 episodes. Patriot Act addressed the contemporary cultural and political landscape. In August 2020, the show was canceled after 40 episodes in six seasons.

In April 2019, Minhaj was named Time's 100 Most Influential People in the World and won his second Peabody Award for Patriot Act .

In September 2019, Minhaj testified during a United States House Committee on Financial Services hearing about student loan debt .
