The University of California, Hastings College of the Law is a state law school in San Francisco .

Founded in 1878 by Judge Serranus Clinton Hastings , the college is the oldest law school on the West Coast of the United States and therefore the first law school affiliated with the University of California . As one of the few university-affiliated law schools, Hastings College does not share its campus with other degree programs. The campus includes three buildings along McAllister Street.

When Hastings donated the founding capital for the Law School to the University of California, he attached two conditions: The college in San Francisco must remain close to the courts, and it must not be under the supervision of the University of California. This means that Hastings College must apply for its budget directly to the State of California. The governor of California appoints eight of the nine members of the supervisory board , the ninth member must come from the family of the founder Hastings. The current dean is Frank H. Wu .

Hastings College offers a three-year Juris Doctor degree and a one-year LL.M. -Degree.

The in-house O'Brien Center for Scholarly Publications publishes nine academic journals, including the Hastings Law Journal, founded in 1949 .
