In 1868 Ralston named the country after his friend Anson Burlingame , who was US ambassador to China until a year earlier . After the 1906 San Francisco earthquake , hundreds of plots of land were sold to people looking to build new homes. The city was therefore founded in 1908.

Burlingame is known as the City of Trees (Engl. City of Trees ) because of the number of trees within the city (18,000 public trees). In 1908 the Burlingame Board of Trustees issued an order that "forbids cutting, injuring or destroying trees".
