The Richmond Bridge is a road bridge over the River Thames in London . It connects the district of Richmond on the northeast side with the district of St. Margarets on the southwest side, both located in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames . The main road A305 runs above it.

Since the river deviates from its usual west-east flow direction at this point and describes an S-curve, the river banks are called " Middlesex bank" and " Surrey bank". This is reminiscent of the earlier border between the two historic counties.

In 1760, William Windham, the owner of the ferry at the time , asked Parliament for permission to build a bridge. However, Richmond residents opposed a wooden bridge and requested one made of stone. Construction began in 1774 under the direction of architects James Paine and Kenton Couse. It was opened in 1777. Until 1859 the bridge was subject to tolls . In 1927 it became the property of the Counties of Surrey and Middlesex . It was widened between 1937 and 1939.
