The Village Sessions is an EP that the American guitarist and singer John Mayer released on December 12, 2006 on Aware Records ( Columbia ). It includes acoustic versions of pieces previously on the Continuum and Try! have appeared.

Emergence

John Mayer recorded the EP in Los Angeles in late 2006 with Robbie McIntosh , who is also a member of his tour band . The guest singer and musician on "Waiting on the World to Change" is guitarist Ben Harper , who also contributed to this track on Continuum . The recording location was the studio The Village Recorder , through which the EP got its name. Mayer had previously recorded parts of his album Continuum there .

Publications

The Village Sessions was released on CD and was sold in limited numbers and initially only through independent record stores.

In May 2007, The Village Sessions was also released as a download from iTunes . As a bonus, there was a short film called In Repair: One Song, One Day , which documents the creation of the song "In Repair" for the album Continuum .

Reception and awards

The Village Sessions was generally well received by the critics. All reviewers unanimously praised Mayer's guitar playing, which proves his qualities as a musician. It was also repeatedly pointed out how simple the arrangements are. This creates a special intimacy with which Mayer leads his music back to its beginnings.

Opinions were divided about Ben Harper's interpretation of "Waiting On The World To Change". It was criticized that the title did not match the rest of the EP and that Harper did not enrich the piece. Other critics, however, found it to be the best track on the album.

For the acoustic version of "Belief" included on The Village Sessions , John Mayer was nominated for the 2008 Grammy Awards in the Best Male Pop Vocal Performance category.
