Florence is an American city in Arizona in Pinal County , the county seat of which it is. It has about 26,000 inhabitants (as of 2017) on an area of 21.5 km². The city is on Arizona State Routes 79 and 287 . A landmark is the courthouse from 1891, the oldest public building in Arizona still in use. Due to cost-saving measures, the clock in the tower had to be dispensed with. Instead, a clock was painted that permanently shows 11:44 a.m. The building is listed on the United States' National Register of Historic Places along with a number of other local buildings . During the Second World War, there was a large prison camp not far from the city, the Camp Florence . In the camp established in 1942/1943, over 13,000 prisoners of war from Germany and Italy were temporarily held.

Florence is also home to the largest prison in the state of Arizona, which opened in 1908 and now has room for nearly 4,000 inmates.
