Henry Lee Giclas (born December 9, 1910 in Flagstaff , Arizona , † April 2, 2007 there ) was an American astronomer .

Giclas studied astronomy from 1929 with interruptions at the universities of Southern California and Arizona and worked temporarily as an assistant at the Lowell Observatory . In 1942 he graduated from the University of California, Berkeley , and took a position at the Lowell Observatory.

Giclas made numerous photographs of asteroids and comets in order to determine their exact orbits. In 1957 he began a systematic survey of the sky that lasted eighteen years, using a telescope with a 32 cm aperture designed for astrophotography . He compared the photo plates taken at certain time intervals using a blink comparator . The goal was the discovery of the hypothetical Planet X .

Over time, Giclas discovered 17 asteroids, including (1886) Lowell , (2061) Anza, and (2201) Oljato . Oljato is believed to be the original body of the Chi Orionid meteor shower . In addition, he discovered the periodic comet 84P / Giclas .

From 1968 he was professor of astronomy at Ohio State University . In 1979 he retired.

The asteroid (1741) discovered in 1960 was named Giclas in his honor .
