Dame Marjorie Morris Scardino DBE , FRSA (* 1947 in Flagstaff , Arizona ) is a British manager of American descent.

Marjorie Scardino grew up in Texarkana . In 1969 she earned a BA in French and Psychology from Baylor University . She dropped out of a law degree at George Washington University and then worked as a journalist .

She married Albert Scardino, a journalist, and graduated from the University of San Francisco with a law degree in 1975 . She later practiced law in Savannah .

She and her husband bought the weekly Georgia Gazette . This won a Pulitzer Prize in 1984 .

In 1985 Scardino became director of the British weekly The Economist for North America. It was able to increase the circulation and the income. In 1992 she became CEO of the Economist Group. In 1997 she became CEO of Pearson Publishing Group , which has a 50% stake in The Economist . Scardino was the first woman to run a top 100 company on the London Stock Exchange .

On May 21, 2004, Scardino received an honorary doctorate from Saint Mary's University Halifax . In 2010 she was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . She and her husband live in London and have three children. Her youngest son Albert Henry Hugh Scardino (* 1984) graduated from Columbia University in 2005 and works as a film actor and producer under the stage name Hal Scardino .
