Mikael Tillström (born March 5, 1972 in Jönköping ) is a former Swedish tennis player .

Career

Tillström was already very successful as a junior player. He won the title in junior doubles with Mårten Renström at the US Open in 1990 and only failed in junior singles in the final against Andrea Gaudenzi .

The following year he became a professional and played a tournament on the ATP Challenger Tour in singles and doubles, mainly with Renstrom, several Challenger tournaments and two tournaments on the ATP Tour .

In 1992 he won three Challenger tournaments in doubles and his first ATP tournament at the side of Nicklas Kulti in San Marino . In the individual, he caused a big surprise when he failed as a qualifier at the Masters tournament in Monte Carlo only in the quarter-finals against eventual winner Thomas Muster .

In 1993 he was unsuccessful in singles; in doubles, however, he was able to reach the second round at the French Open , and he also made his debut at the Australian Open .

In 1994 he was able to surprise with a round of 16 at the French Open . In the third round he defeated Richard Krajicek , then number 16 in the world, and was only eliminated against world number one Pete Sampras . In doubles, he won several Challenger tournaments, one of them at the side of multiple Grand Slam winner Anders Järryd .

In 1995 he was able to surprise again at the French Open; he first defeated Goran Ivanišević , but then retired in round two. In Stockholm he reached the quarter-finals after victories over Mats Wilander and Richard Krajicek . In doubles, he won four Challenger tournaments on the side of Nicklas Kulti.

1996 was his most successful year in singles. He failed at the Australian Open after defeating Thomas Muster in the quarterfinals to Michael Chang and reached the third round at the French Open ; after a surprise victory over Stefan Edberg , he also succeeded in Wimbledon . With these successes he reached number 39 in the world rankings. He rarely played doubles with little success.

In 1997 he celebrated a successful Davis Cup debut at the side of Nicklas Kulti against the Swiss Lorenzo Manta and Marc Rosset . With Kulti he also won the ATP tournament in Båstad and with the Australian Michael Tebbutt after a sensational semi-final victory over Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde the tournament in Indianapolis . In his victory, which should remain his only one without Kulti, he faced it in the final. In individual he had little success at most major events, but at the Chennai tournament he was able to win his only career title in individual.

In 1998 he made his debut in the Davis Cup against the Slovak Karol Kučera unsuccessfully in singles. He reached the final in Chennai and reached the third round of the US Open - in all other Grand Slam tournaments he failed in round two. In doubles he won the tournaments in Saint Petersburg and Stockholm with Kulti and reached the second round of the US Open .

In 1999 Tillström and Kulti reached the semi-finals for the first time at the French Open and Tillström rose to the top 50 of the double world rankings. In singles, his entry into the third round of the Australian Open and the final in Singapore were his greatest successes.

In 2000 he took part in the Olympic Games in Sydney and lost there in singles in the third round against Roger Federer . In doubles he failed together with Kulti completely surprisingly in round one to the Belarusians Max Mirny and Uladsimir Waltschkou . With the semi-finals at Wimbledon and three tournament victories, it was still a sporting year for both of them. However, he had to end the season in late October due to a back injury. After that, Tillström did not play any more tournaments.
