The Manchester ATP tournament (officially the Manchester Open ) is a former British men's tennis tournament . In 1880 the lawn tournament was founded as the Northern Tennis Championships and was one of the oldest tournaments in the world until it was closed. It was also considered the Wimbledon of the North. Up until 1926 it was held alternately in Manchester and Liverpool (in the even years in Liverpool). Between 1974 and 1982 the tournament was played at irregular intervals as part of the then Grand Prix Tennis Circuit . In 1989 it took place as part of the ATP Challenger Tour . From 1990 to 1994 it was part of the ATP Tour and was then replaced by the Nottingham tournament . From 1995 to 2009 and from 2015 there will be a tournament at the same place as part of the ATP Challenger Tour. The record winner is Sydney Howard Smith , who won the tournament seven times from 1899 to 1905.
