Gardnar Mulloy
Gardnar Putnam Mulloy (born November 22, 1913 in Washington, DC , † November 14, 2016 in Miami , Florida ) was an American tennis player .
biography
Mulloy dominated the men's doubles tournaments at the American championships in the 1940s with his doubles partner and compatriot Bill Talbert . He won this Grand Slam tournament a total of four times (1942, 1945, 1946, 1948). Almost ten years later he won Wimbledon together with the American Budge Patty in 1957 .
The American won five men's doubles titles and made it into a final nine times. In 1952 he moved a single time in a single final at the American championships, but was defeated there by the Australian Frank Sedgman .
Gardnar Mulloy played 14 games for the US Davis Cup team and won 11 matches. His balance is 11: 3. In the 1946 , 1948 and 1949 seasons he won the Davis Cup with the team . In 1972 he was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame .
During World War II he served in the US Navy and led landing operations in North Africa and Europe.
