Christian Bergström (born July 19, 1967 in Gothenburg ) is a former Swedish tennis player .

Career

Bergström was Swedish national junior champion in 1984 and European junior champion the following year. In the same year he reached the semi-finals of the US Open with the juniors and subsequently he became a tennis professional. In the following two years he was able to win a Challenger tournament , in 1988 he was the first time in the semi-finals of an ATP tournament at the Swedish Open . His greatest successes were his finals in Adelaide in 1992 and 1993, where he gave up the match after winning the first set. In doubles he also stood at the side of his compatriot Magnus Gustafsson in the final of the Swedish Open in 1992. Although he could not win a tournament in his career, he reached position 32 in the world rankings in 1992 in singles .

His best performance in Grand Slam tournaments was reaching the quarter-finals; 1993 at the Australian Open 1993 / men's singles , where he defeated Ivan Lendl in the first round and then lost to Stefan Edberg , and twice at Wimbledon , where he lost to Stefan Edberg in 1990 and Boris Becker in 1994 .

He played three singles and one doubles game for the Swedish Davis Cup team in 1991 and 1992 . Bergström won all four games, including his singles against Richard Fromberg in a 5-0 win over Australia in the Davis Cup quarter-finals in 1992.
