Grand Slam Cup
The Grand Slam Cup from 1990 to 1999, the most lucrative tennis tournament of the year, because the winner received up to two million dollars. However, the sporting importance of the event was controversial because no world ranking points were awarded. In 2000 the Grand Slam Cup was replaced by the Tennis Masters Cup .
The Grand Slam Cup was an indoor tournament that was founded in competition with the ATP World Championship , which took place a few weeks before it . Like the ATP World Championships, it had different regulations than "normal" tournaments. Only the 16 players who had performed most successfully in the Grand Slam tournaments of the year were qualified .
The venue was Munich , as the popularity of tennis in Germany was at a peak in the early 1990s thanks to the successes of Boris Becker and Steffi Graf in particular .
Record winner is Pete Sampras , who was the only player to win the tournament twice (1990 and 1997).
