Masters (tennis)
The Masters was 1970-1989 in addition to the Grand Slam tournaments , the most important tennis -Veranstaltung of Lords. It was also the last major tournament of the year.
In 1990 the Masters was replaced by the ATP World Championship and then by the Tennis Masters Cup . Since 2009 the tournament has been held under the name ATP World Tour Finals .
After the Masters had changed venue several times at the beginning, the tournament has been held in New York's Madison Square Garden since 1977 .
The eight best players in the tennis world rankings were eligible to participate . After a round robin round (with two groups of four players each), the knockout system was in effect from 1972 onwards from the semi-finals .
The tournament's record winner was Ivan Lendl , who triumphed five times and made it into the final four more times. Ilie Năstase achieved four titles, John McEnroe was successful three times. In addition to his victory in 1988, Boris Becker made it to the final three times. If you count the ATP World Championship, Becker reached the finals eight times and celebrated three victories.
