Gilbert played soccer until he was eleven and then switched sport. In 1986 he was national French tennis champion in both singles and doubles. Two years later he became a professional tennis player and first played on the ATP Challenger Tour , on which he celebrated his first title win in 1990 in Hossegor . In the following year he won another individual Challenger title in Neu-Ulm , and with his compatriot Olivier Delaître he won his first double title on the ATP World Tour . Between 1993 and 1995 he won other titles on the Challenger Tour. His second and last ATP double title followed in Johannesburg . Two more times in the course of his career he was in a double-final. He achieved his highest scores in the world rankings in 1992 with position 61 in singles and in 1996 with position 50 in doubles.
His best performance in a Grand Slam tournament was twice reaching the third round at the French Open , in which he was successful in 1993 against Boris Becker . In doubles, he reached the second round once at the French Open and the US Open .
Gilbert played a single game for the French Davis Cup team in 1993 . In the semi-finals of the world group, which was lost 3-2 to India , he competed in the singles against Ramesh Krishnan , to which he was defeated in five sets.
