Hansjörg Schwaier (born March 24, 1964 in Mindelheim ) is a former German tennis player .

Career

Schwaier achieved his highest ranking - 38th place in the world rankings - on September 9, 1985. He was part of the squad of the German Davis Cup team, with a 3-1 record. He won his individual against Aaron Krickstein in the Davis Cup quarterfinals in 1985, giving the German team their first win against the USA. Although he was a clay court specialist, he made it into the finals of the US Open among the juniors , which are played on hard courts. Hansjörg Schwaier is the only German tennis player to date who has won all titles at German championships, from youth to men. In addition, he became German team champion with the MTTC Iphitos Munich. His greatest success on the ATP Tour was reaching the finals at the BMW Open in Munich. Schwaier now runs a tennis school together with his former successful trainer Tom Würth on the tennis facility of TC Riemerling eV in south-east Munich.

Style of play

Hansjörg Schwaier distinguished himself primarily through his defensive play, which was characterized by an extreme topspin in the forehand and backhand. So he tried to involve the opponent in long baseline duels. Because of this way of playing, he favored the rather slow sand surface.
