Elva is an Italian commune with 89 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Cuneo , Piedmont region .
geography
Elva is located in a side valley of the Valle Maira , 54 km from the provincial capital Cuneo . The neighboring communities are Prazzo and Stroppo in the Valle Maira and Bellino , Casteldelfino and Sampeyre in the Valle Varaita .
The area of the municipality is between 1080 m slm and 3064 m slm above sea level and covers an area of 26.37 km² .
Elva belongs - like the other villages of the Maira valley - to the Occitan valleys of the Piedmontese Alps.
history
The first evidence of the existence of the place comes from Roman times , in the form of a stone in the facade of the village church. The name Elva probably refers to the term Gens Helva or the tribe of the Galli Helvi , who settled in this area.
Sightseeing and tourism
Elva is located on the Italian long-distance hiking trail Grande Traversata delle Alpi .
The parish church (Chiesa Parocchiale) has one of the most important art treasures of western Piedmont with its choir frescoes. The works of art created in the late 15th century are attributed to the Dutch traveling painter Hans Clemer .
