Taeko Onuki ( Japanese 大 貫 妙 子 Õnuki Taeko * November 28, 1953 in Suginami , Tokyo ), also called Ta-bo ( Japanese タ ー 坊 Tābō ), is a Japanese singer-songwriter , composer , pianist , guitarist and writer . She was also the composer and singer of the band SUGAR BABE from 1973 until its dissolution in 1976 . She moves in a wide variety of musical genres such as jazz , new wave , city ​​pop and world music .

Career

Taeko Onuki was born in Suginami , Tokyo in 1953 . Her father was one of the kamikaze pilots in World War II. At the age of 20 she worked in a band called SUGER BABE as a composer , singer and professional musician . In 1976 Taeko debuted with her album Gray Skies .

SUGER BABE is a Japanese band formed in 1973by singer Taeko Onuki and singer Tatsuro Yamashita .

Now they are very famous all over the world. But at the time, critics were not enthusiastic. They found that buyers had lost interest and so the band split in 1976, just 1 year after their first album was released.

Solo career

After the band ended, she started her solo career in 1976 with titles like Gray Skies . The following year she released her second album SUNSHOWER .

In 1978 she changed the record company once because she was not satisfied with the album Mignonne . Onuki then moved there at the invitation of the record label Sony Music Entertainment Japan . In the 1980s Onuki released various children's song albums. There were also excursions into the world of television.

In addition to her singing career, Onuki also appears regularly on Japanese radio (for example in the series NIGHT STORIES ). She also composed the score for the film Shall we dance? (1996). The title track she sang Shall we dance? became a hit. In 1998 Onuki won the Japanese Academy Award (JAA, Japanese 日本 ア カ デ ミ ー 賞, nippon academii shō).
