The invitation tournament was held from December 1st to 2nd, 1980 at Bligthy’s in Farnworth, England, in the Metropolitan Borough of Bolton . The Englishman Steve Davis won the final 4-1 against the Northern Irishman Dennis Taylor , the highest tournament break was played by Welshman Ray Reardon .

The Northern Irishman Dennis Taylor was able to win the first frame through a break of 53 , but Steve Davis - who was to win the World Cup in April 1981 - first equalized and won the following three frames to win the title.
