The Cistercian convent Llanllugan was from about 1188 to 1536 a monastery of Cistercian nuns in Llanllugan, Powys , in Wales .

history

Maredudd ap Rhobert, Lord of Cydewain (* 1145), founded the nunnery Virgin Mary (Virgin Mary) west of Welshpool around 1188 , which was under the supervision of Strata Marcella Abbey and was dissolved in 1536. The monastery belonged to the diocese of St Asaph . It is the subject of a famous poem by the 14th century Welsh poet, Dafydd ap Gwilym (title: Cyrchu Lleian ). Richard of Shrewsbury, 1st Duke of York, was a 15th century patron of the monastery. The important stained glass windows dated to 1453, of which remains can be found in the local St. Mary's Church, probably go back to him. The church is the only structural remnant of the monastery.
