The AwtoWAS Classic 1984 was a professional snooker tournament that influenced the world rankings for the 1983/84 season . It was held from January 8th to 15th, 1984 in the Spectrum Arena in Warrington , England . The winner was the Englishman Steve Davis , who defeated his compatriot Tony Meo 9: 8 in the final. The highest break of the tournament was a 143 break by the Englishman Rex Williams .
Prize money
For the third time in a row, the automaker Lada sponsored the tournament. Despite being named to the ranked tournament and increasing the number of players in the main round, the prize pool rose by £ 18,000 to £ 82,000.

Tournament course
In the main tournament, the 16 qualifiers met the 16 players seeded for the main round. Up to the final, each player played a maximum of 9 frames, in the final they played in the best of 17 frames mode .

The favorite Steve Davis , at the time two-time world champion, moved into the final with two wins in the decider , in the semifinals he managed a 5-4 victory over 19-year-old John Parrott , who surprisingly survived all three qualifying rounds and made it to the semifinals. Davis' opponent was Tony Meo , who had won several invitational tournaments in previous seasons.
The finale started with two significant frame gains from Davis. But Tony Meo managed the turnaround in the third frame with a 52 break, he only equalized to 2: 2 and won two more frames to 2: 4. In the seventh frame, eDavis was finally able to win again, he also played the only century break of the finals with a 122 break. Davis then managed to equalize as well as the renewed lead, which he was able to extend to 7: 4. But Meo managed to turn things around again and first equalized at 7: 7 and then won the next frame at 7: 8, so that he only needed one frame to win the tournament. But Davis managed to equalize to 8: 8 with an 84 break, now the decider should decide the final. Davis won it for the third time in a row with 60:42 and won the Classic for the third time.

qualification
The qualification took place from November 8-11, 1983. In three rounds, the players competed in the lower world rankings from 17th place. Only one first round participant, John Parrott , survived all qualifying rounds. At the end 16 players qualified.
Century Breaks
During the tournament eight Centurys were played by seven players. Three Centurys were played in the qualification, the remaining five followed in the main round.
