The Australian Masters 1982 , alternatively the Winfield Masters 1982 or Winfield Australian Masters 1982 , was a professional snooker invitation tournament of the 1982/83 season . The tournament was played in July 1982 in the Tattersalls Club or in the TV studios of Channel 10 in the Australian city of Sydney . The winner was the Englishman Steve Davis , who defeated local hero Eddie Charlton in the final. Records of potentially high breaks are unknown.
Prize money
As in previous years, Winfield appeared as sponsor of the tournament . Compared to the previous year, the prize money rose by a good £ 7,000 to £ 18,568, which all went to the winner.
Tournament course
The tournament was organized by Eddie Charlton . A total of eight players were invited, four of whom each played against each other in a group. The first two in each group qualified for the semi-finals, from which the title was played in the knockout system . While only one frame per game was played in the group phase , the results of the semi-finals were calculated from the sum of the results of two frames and three frames in the final. This means that in the following all results are given in points.
Group stage
Group A
The first group was won by Eddie Charlton , who, in addition to two other wins , owed this to a clear victory over Steve Davis , who nevertheless qualified for the semi-finals with two wins from his other games with second place. Third place went to John Spencer due to a clear victory over fourth-placed Canadian Cliff Thorburn .

The reigning world champion Alex Higgins took last place .
