final

While leading players in the world such as defending champion Steve Davis or ex-world champion Ray Reardon did not take part in the tournament, after the early elimination of most Australian and European players, it was dominated by the Canadian professionals, who made up three of the four remaining players in the semifinals . While on the one hand Cliff Thorburn had reached the semi-finals with a victory over Jimmy White and now met his compatriot Kirk Stevens , who had made it into this round with victories over Doug Mountjoy and local hero Eddie Charlton , on the other hand was the third Canadians in the league, Bill Werbeniuk , moved into the semifinals with victories over the Northern Irish Dennis Taylor and Alex Higgins and had to compete there against the Englishman Tony Knowles , who had previously had a tremendous game against Tony Meo , especially in the semifinals . But while Cliff Thorburn prevailed 5: 2 in the all-Canadian game, Knowles experienced a white-wash of his competitor Werbeniuk in his game , which finally secured the Canadian final.

While the first two frames of the endgame were balanced with a high break per player each and the score was 1: 1, Thorburn was able to break away to 3: 1 and - despite a century break by Werbeniuk in the frame in between - 4: 2 . Then Werbeniuk managed to shorten it to 4: 3, but the following three frames were mostly relatively close to his rivals, with Thorburn winning both the game 7: 3 and the tournament.
