Curse of the Crucible

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Curse of the Crucible (English: Crucible curse or The curse of the Crucible ) describes the fact that in snooker no world champion was able to defend his first title in the following year after the snooker world championship in 1977 was moved to the Crucible Theater in Sheffield . The last player to defend his first title was John Pulman in 1964 , when the world championship was still decided in so-called challenge matches .

In the crucible

The following world champions could not defend their first title in the next year. Of the fifteen players who won their first World Championship title at the Crucible Theater, six lost their first match as defending champions ( Terry Griffiths 1980, Steve Davis 1982, Dennis Taylor 1986, Graeme Dott 2007, Neil Robertson 2011 and Stuart Bingham 2016) and it only two players could reach the final ( Joe Johnson 1987 and Ken Doherty 1998). Players who kicked the defending champions from the tournament are jokingly referred to as 'Keepers of the Curse'.

Ray Reardon , Alex Higgins and John Spencer are the only players to win the World Championship both before and during the Crucible era. All three could neither defend their first world championship title nor their first Crucible title in the following year.

Remarks

  1. Griffiths, along with the eight seeded players, received a bye in round 1, and so the round of 16 was his first match.
