Wilhelm Tell (politician)

Wilhelm Tell (born October 1, 1871 in Leipzig ; † May 12, 1950 ) was a German politician .

Life

Wilhelm Tell began his political career as mayor of Altenburg , the royal seat of the Duchy of Saxony-Altenburg .

On November 12, 1918, the day before he abdicated, Duke Ernst II of Saxony-Altenburg appointed him Chief Minister of State. He headed a cabinet made up of ducal officials and members of the state parliament of the majority Social Democratic Party of Germany (MSPD). When the Free State of Saxony-Altenburg was constituted on November 13, 1918 , he continued to head its government. He resigned on March 27, 1919, and was succeeded by the Social Democrat August Frölich . For the Free State of Saxony-Altenburg, Tell led the negotiations that led to the merger with the small Thuringian states of Saxony-Gotha , Saxony-Meiningen , Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach , Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt , Schwarzburg-Sondershausen and the people's state of Reuss to form the State of Thuringia on May 1st Prepared in 1920.

Until 1929 Wilhelm Tell was a member of the Thuringian state parliament , first for the German Democratic Party (DDP), then for the People's Rights Party (VRP).
