This list of warships of the US Navy includes all ships with the hull designation "BB". Some ships were never completed.

Four US Navy battleships were designated as second-class battleships : These ships were smaller and lighter than normal battleships - and therefore cheaper to build. But the US Navy could not gain much from this class and therefore preferred to build fewer, but more powerful ships with the granted financial resources.

All ships - with the exception of the late 19th century USS Kearsarge (BB-5) - were named, at least in theory, after the 48 states until the cessation of battleship construction. Numerous planned battleships were never built, so that the name “Montana” was the only one that was never actually used - a class of ships named after it was recently planned. Seven battleships are still preserved today, including the oldest ship, the USS Texas (BB-35) , which served in both world wars, and all four Iowa-class ships that were actually built .

(s) denotes Second Class Battleships (compared to other US battleships of the same era)
(n) means ships that have never been commissioned or that have never been completed
