This gives farmers access to markets, which increases their income. In the areas where One Acre Fund operates, infant mortality rates for children up to two years old have decreased by 50%. In 2011, these programs were adopted by 55,000 farming families from Rwanda , Kenya and Burundi , who on average tripled their crops and increased their profits by 102%. The participation fee paid by the farmers on credit at One Acre Fund was 98% repaid and covered 80% of the costs. One Acre Fund financed the remaining costs through donations and grants from other organizations, mainly from the USA. The organization employs 565 people, almost exclusively on site. The headquarters are in Bungoma , Kenya.

concept

A field officer looks after 150 to 200 farmers on site: In the first step, he explains the concept, convinces the farmers to participate, brings them together in small groups of three to twelve farmers and concludes contracts with them about the loans for seeds and fertilizers and their repayment from. The field officer is also responsible for collecting loan repayments. Farmers typically have half an acre to five .

In addition to delivering the seeds, One Acre Fund also conducts extensive training. For example, it is taught to sow the seeds in rows and at optimal intervals, but beforehand fertilizer is given in portions into the intended hole. Various hybrids of corn and beans are offered as seeds for cultivation as a staple food. Experiments are being carried out with Grevillings , trees that accumulate nitrogen in the soil and can be sold after a few years. The fertilizers are artificial fertilizers as natural fertilizers - especially manure - are not available in sufficient quantities.

After the harvest, proper drying and storage are taught and an insecticide is given so that the harvest is not destroyed after about three months, but can be kept as food until the next harvest season or can be sold if market prices are high.
