Kulgam is a district in the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir .

The district was detached from the Anantnag district on April 2, 2007 . It is located in the southwestern part of the Kashmir Valley west of the city of Anantnag . The Veshav , a left tributary of the Jhelam , drains the northern flank of the Pir Panjal and crosses the district. The administrative seat of the district is the city of Kulgam .

According to the 2011 census , the district had 424,483 residents. It ranks 554 out of 640 districts in India. The population density was 1035 inhabitants per square kilometer. The population growth from 2001 to 2011 was 7.73%. The district's gender distribution was 951 women for every 1,000 men. The literacy rate was 59.23%.
