Chandrasinh "Chandra" Hirjee Jewraj (* 1924 in Mumbai , British India ; † 1989 ) was an Indian English billiards and snooker player who won the Indian English Billiards Championship four times and between 1952 and 1958 the final seven times reached the Indian Snooker Championship .

Life

Chandra Hirjee was born in Mumbai in what was then British India in 1924 as the eldest of five sons of Hirjee Jewraj and Champabai Hirjee, who belonged to an economic family based in Calcutta . After studying at St. Xavier's Collegiate School in Calcutta, Hirjee joined the family business as a teenager. Even then, Hirjee was considered a sporty person with several victories in football or in the athletic field, who, under pressure from his father, had started to play snooker and English billiards at an early age. After work, he mostly trained these two sports with his father and friends, so he quickly won local and regional tournaments. During the Second World War , Hirjee was finally seriously injured by a baton attack by British-Indian troops, from which he had to recover for weeks and suffered from headaches for a lifetime. Shortly afterwards he married Surya Udeshi.

In 1946, Hirjee reached the final of the Indian Championship in English Billiards , defeating CC James. After he won his title a year later by defeating TA Selvaraj, it was not until 1952 that he reached the final again. However, he lost with 2750: 3630 against Wilson Jones . In the same year he lost 7-2 in the final of the Indian Snooker Championship against Jones. In 1953 he reached the final of the snooker championship again and lost 1: 5 to Leslie Driffield , before losing in both competitions to Wilson Jones in the final in 1954, in the snooker championship with 4: 5, in English Billiards with 3272: 3333 .

Also in 1955 he was defeated at the English Billiards Championship in the final Jones with 2945: 3775, while he failed in the final of the Snooker Championship to TA Selvaraj. Finally, in 1956, Hirjee won the third English Billiards championship with a 4132: 2730 victory over Jones, while he had to admit defeat in snooker Mohammed Lafir . One year in English Billiards reciprocated for the previous year's defeat and defeated Hirjee with 3239: 3949 and also in snooker Hirjee lost again to Mohammed Lafir. In 1958 Hirjee was able to become champion in English Billiards for the fourth time with a 3825: 3448 victory over Wilson Jones, but in contrast he was defeated by Jones 5: 6 in the final of the snooker championship.

Hirjee died in 1989, possibly in Calcutta.
