Manan Chandra (born February 28, 1981 in New Delhi ) is an Indian billiards player . He was several times national champion in both pool and snooker and played as a professional on the Snooker Main Tour in the 2002/03 season .

Career

Manan Chandra was the Indian Under-21 Junior Champion in 1997, 1999 and 2001. He first attracted international attention in 1999, when he reached the semi-finals of the U21 World Cup and was only barely defeated by eventual world champion Rodney Goggins (6: 8). Two years later he reached the final of the U21 Asian Cup , in which he had to admit defeat to the Thai Supoj Saenla 6-0. In 2002 he reached the final of the Indian championship for the first time and lost 7-2 to Alok Kumar . At the amateur world championship in 2002 he made it to the round of 16.

In the 2002/03 season , Chandra was eliminated in his first five tournaments in the first round. His first professional win came at the Irish Masters in 2003 when he beat Paul Davison 5: 4 , but then clearly lost to Ryan Day in the round of 96 (0: 5). After he was again without a win at the Scottish Open in 2003 , he achieved his best result in qualifying for the professional world championship . With wins against Gary Ponting and Jason Ferguson , he moved into the round of the last 80, in which he was defeated by the Englishman Dave Finbow with 8:10. At the end of the season he finished 107th in the world rankings and thus lost his professional status.

In the following two seasons Chandra tried to get back to the Main Tour via the Challenge Tour , but never got past the round of 16. In 2004 and 2005 he took part as an amateur in qualifying for the professional World Cup, but failed in the first round to Leonard de Griffa and Matthew Selt respectively . At the Asian Cup in 2005 , he reached the quarter-finals and lost to eventual Asian champions Jin Long . In 2006 he reached the amateur world championship with victories against Andrew Pagett and Craig Steadman in the semifinals, in which he lost 7: 8 to Daniel Ward . In the game for third place, Chandra then prevailed 4-1 against Atthasit Mahitthi . In the same year he became Indian champion for the first time.

Together with Yasin Merchant and Alok Kumar, Chandra won the bronze medal in the team competition of the Asian Indoor Games in 2007 . In 2008 he reached the round of 16 at 6-Red-Snooker International . In 2009 he won the gold medal in the team competition of the Asian Indoor Games together with Aditya Mehta and Brijesh Damani . In the 2013/14 season he received a wildcard for the Indian Open 2013 , in which, however, he had to admit defeat to the Englishman Robbie Williams 1: 4 in the wildcard round. At the Amateur World Cup in 2013 he reached the round of 16, in which he was eliminated with 0: 5 against Jeff Cundy . In the same year Chandra was Indian champion for the second time and Asian champion with the Indian team. At the Amateur World Cup in 2014 , he reached the quarter-finals, where he was eliminated 6-1 against Muhammad Sajjad . In 2015 he reached the quarterfinals of the 6 Red World Championship .

In January 2016 Chandra became Indian runner-up after a 3-6 final defeat against Aditya Mehta. In July 2016 he took part again as a wildcard at the Indian Open and was defeated in the wildcard round by Andrew Higginson from England . At the end of the year he reached the last sixteen at the Amateur World Cup , in which he had to admit defeat to Irishman Michael Judge 5-0.

Pool

Chandra won his first national championship in pool in 2001 when he won the 9-ball competition. Between 2003 and 2005 he won this discipline three times in a row and in 2005 he also won the 8-ball title . In July 2005 he took part in the 9-ball world championship , in which, however, he was eliminated in the preliminary round. In 2007, he and Dharminder Singh Lilly formed the Indian team at the World Cup of Pool , which was eliminated in the first round against Canadians Edwin Montal and Alain Martel . In the same year he became Indian 9-ball champion for the fifth time and a year later he won the second title in 8-ball. In 2010 he finished third in the Indian 8-Ball Championship.
