Ben Hancorn (born May 24, 1982 in Bristol ) is an English snooker player who won the 100th edition of the English Amateur Championship in 2020 . In the same year he qualified for the professional seasons 2020/21 and 2021/22 via the Q School .
Career
Hancorn was born in Bristol in 1982 and made first attracted attention when he during the 2002/03 season in two events of the WPBSA Open Tour took part and among other things, after a victory over Mark Joyce the second qualifying round of the World Snooker Championship reached and there against Joe Meara lost . He also reached the quarter-finals of the southern qualifying competition of the English Amateur Championship . Between 2003 and 2006, Hancorn finally took part in various qualification opportunities for the professional tour, such as the Challenge Tour or the Pontin's International Open Series . He also took unsuccessful in two editions of the Merseyside Professionals as well as qualifying for the 2004 World Snooker Championship part before in the qualification of the 2005 World Snooker Championship , among others, Steve Mifsud and Colm Gilcreest defeated and only in the third qualifying round against Mehmet Husnu retired. In 2006 he also made it to the final of the southern qualifying competition of the English Amateur Championship, in which he lost 4-6 to Martin O'Donnell . Further participation in various amateur and qualification tours followed by 2008.
In the same year Hancorn qualified with a victory over Lee Page in the finals of the southern qualifying competition for the final of the English Amateur Championship, but what he lost 7: 9 to David Grace . After he survived the group stage of the amateur world championship unbeaten in the same year , reached the round of 16 by defeating Ben Judge and lost there against Pankaj Advani , he paused from snooker for several years.
From 2015 he again took part in various amateur tournaments with some success. In 2018 he made it into the third round of the English Amateur Championship. In the same year he also took part in the three events of the Q School , with a participation in the semi-finals of his group and a local defeat against Hammad Miah being his best result. As a result, he was able to take part in the Challenge Tour 2018/19 , at whose events he reached the semi-finals once and the finals at the sixth event, but lost 3-0 to David Grace. With his 14th place in the overall ranking of the Challenge Tour he missed a qualification for the Snooker Main Tour . While he also took part in the English Amateur Championship again without much success, he was able to take part in both the snooker shoot-out and the Indian Open during the 2018/19 professional season , but lost in the qualification against Peter Lines and Michael Georgiou respectively his opening game.
After attending the Q School in 2019 but deteriorating compared to the previous year, he took part in various amateur events during 2019. In 2020 he made it into the final of the English Amateur Championship with a victory over Simon Bedford, among other things , which he won 5-3 against Rory McLeod . This made Hancorn the winner of the 100th edition of the tournament. During the season, Hancorn also took part in the Challenge Tour 2019/20 and the English Amateur Tour and reached the round of 64 at the WSF Open and the quarter-finals at the European Championships . In August he took part in the Q School again and defeated Kuldesh Johal 4-0 in the second event in the final and became a professional player on the Snooker Main Tour at the age of 38 .
