final
Englishman Steve Davis was the leading player in the 1980s and had won six world titles during that time. Now he was still among the world's best , but had to accept Stephen Hendry as the dominant player of the 1990s. Davis started the tournament with a white wash over French champion Eric Le Paul and then moved into the final with wins over Terry Griffiths and vice world champion Jimmy White . There he met Hendry, who in turn had qualified for the final with two white-washs over Mike Henson and Gary Wilkinson and a win over Mike Hallett .
Hendry started the game stronger than Davis and went 0: 4 and later with a 103 break to 2: 5 with 2: 6, before Davis - also with the help of a century break with 102 points - equalized to 6: 6. As a result, a kind of cat-and-mouse game developed when Davis was able to take the lead several times and Hendry equalized immediately. During the next seven frames, three century breaks were played before Davis won the decider with a break of 66 with a break of 9: 9, and thus the game with 10: 9.
