2001

The Rothmans Malta Grand Prix 2000 was a snooker tournament as part of the Snooker Main Tour of the 1999/2000 season . The tournament was introduced in 1994 as the first invitation tournament on the professional tour in Malta. In 1996 and 1997, the European Open came to Malta as a ranking tournament, which was then discontinued. This year they wanted to have a ranking tournament again and therefore combined the two tournaments: From the European Open they took the mode and the venue, the Mediterranean Conference Center in the capital Valletta , from the Grand Prix the name and the wild cards remained for local players. The invitation tournament was waived.

So Stephen Hendry was considered the defending champion, but he was eliminated in the quarterfinals. And Ken Doherty was in the final of the Malta Grand Prix for the third time in a row. His opponent was world number three and UK champion Mark Williams . Doherty won 9-3, becoming the first player to win the Malta Grand Prix twice. It was also his first ranked title since his 1997 World Cup .

In the form of a ranking tournament it was a one-time affair, in the following season it was divided again into an invitation tournament called the Malta Grand Prix and a ranking tournament as a re-edition of the European Open.

Prize money / ranking points

As a ranked tournament, the Malta Grand Prix was a very different category of prize money than the invitation tournament, with £ 290,000 distributed instead of £ 20,000 . But that was still a long way behind the British ranking tournaments and roughly on par with the China Open .

On the other hand, there were just as many points for the world rankings as in the other tournaments apart from the UK Championship and the World Championship .

Wildcard round

So far, three Maltese players have always participated in the Malta Grand Prix. Tony Drago was the only remaining professional to qualify and was eliminated from there. Joe Grech and Alex Borg were given a wild card . Before the actual main tournament began, they were allowed to play in a separate round against the two lowest-placed professionals who had made it to the main round. Joe Grech was the only player from Malta to make it into the bottom 32.

The wildcard games kicked off the tournament on February 20th. The Best of 9 mode (5 winning frames) applied to both games .

Final round

For round 1, the 16 winners of the qualification or wildcard games were drawn from the top 16 of the world rankings . The mode Best of 9 up to the quarterfinals and Best of 11 in the semifinals had previously also applied to the invitation tournaments. This time the final went over the long distance of 9 winning frames (best of 17) instead of the previous 7.
