In the early 1970s he got to know the improvisation music pioneer Lilli Friedemann and received important impulses for his artistic and educational work from her. Since then, improvisation has played a central role in his work. The Trio Dekadenz , which he founded in 1970 with Willem Schulz and Anke Züllich-Lisken , was active until his death in 2018, making it one of the longest- standing ensembles in the improvisational music scene.

As a university professor, he initiated and led instrumental and vocal ensembles for improvisation, in which several generations of students experienced practical experimental approaches to making music and listening. In the circle around Lilli Friedemann, he was also a long-time member of the Ring for Group Improvisation, which was founded in 1964 and which conducts practical and theoretical research on improvisation and organizes concerts and congresses.

From 1989, Lisken and some colleagues, including u. a. Willem Schulz, Anke Züllich-Lisken, Georg Krieger , Anna-Christine Rhode-Jüchtern and Edith Murasov , the cultural life of Bielefeld with the establishment of the association Cooperativa Neue Musik , which organizes a regular series of concerts and talks for new music. From 1989 to 2018, there were more than 100 concerts and monthly lectures and discussion concerts as part of a jour fixe . Lisken was chairman for a long time and was a member of the Cooperativa program advisory board to the end.

In 2014 he and other long-time Cooperativa members - instrumentalists, sound artists, singers and speakers - founded the Cooperativa Ensemble , an ensemble for new music in which Lisken worked as a pianist and composer until his death.

His compositional work mainly includes chamber music and choral works. He performed some song compositions in his solo program “In den Ageless Seen” and published them on the CD “Meine Lieder”. His works have been published by Hans-Sikorski-Verlag . In 1999 he received the Carl von Ossietzky Composition Prize from the University of Oldenburg for his choral work … dein aschenes Haar .

In 2009, Gerd Lisken was honored with the City of Bielefeld's Culture Prize for his diverse cultural activities and his commitment to the city, university and culture .

Lisken died in 2018 at the age of 90 and was buried in the cemetery in Bielefeld- Schildesche .

To commemorate Lisken, a 5-hour memorial concert was held on March 2, 2019 in the Bielefeld jazz club Bunker Ulmenwall with over 50 participants - mostly long-time musical companions, but also former students.
