Helmut Degen (born January 14, 1911 in Aglasterhausen ; † October 2, 1995 in Trossingen ) was a German composer, organist and conductor.

Life

Degen studied from 1930 at the Rheinische Musikschule in Cologne and from 1933 at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn , where he wrote his dissertation on the baroque librettist Friedrich Christian Bressand . In 1933 he founded a chamber orchestra for new music in Cologne and worked as an organist in Altenkirchen . From 1937 he taught music theory at the Musikhochschule Duisburg (since 1987 a department of the Folkwang University ), from 1942 at the Buchenau rural education center near Hersfeld . In 1947 he moved to the Trossingen University of Music and was appointed professor in 1954. His style is reminiscent of Paul Hindemith and he uses techniques similar to the twelve-tone technique . With works for young people and folk music, he tried to make contemporary music easier for broader circles . He also worked as an editor for early music .
