Friedrich Christian Bressand

Friedrich Christian Bressand (* around 1670 in Durlach ; † April 11, 1699 in Wolfenbüttel ) was a German poet and opera librettist of the Baroque period .

Life

Bressand's all too short life was mainly in the service of German courts. From his birth as the son of the margravial mouth cook in the Baden residential city of Durlach to his death in the Brunswick capital of Wolfenbüttel, he was always surrounded by courtly ceremonies. When the castle and town of Durlach were destroyed by French troops in 1689, he was forced to flee. Thanks to family ties, he found refuge at the court of the art-loving and opera-loving Duke Anton Ulrich von Braunschweig , who had the opera house built on Hagenmarkt in Braunschweig in 1690 .

Since the duke wrote opera libretti himself, Bressand advanced quickly and was able to support him in organizing theatrical events. Beginning with German arrangements of French and Italian operas, he soon created a significant number of his own opera libretti with easily composable texts, which were so popular with the composers of the time that many of his libretti were composed several times. Even in the Hamburg opera on Gänsemarkt , which is richly supplied with librettists , his operatic poems were valued, and were even highly recognized by poets of the rank of Christian Heinrich Postel . It was only at the age of twenty-nine that Bressand suddenly died in Wolfenbüttel after ten years of extremely productive creative time.
