from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hessian State Domain Frankenhausen is a teaching, testing and transfer center for ecological agriculture and sustainable regional development. It has been teaching and testing at the University of Kassel since 1998 . The company is managed according to ecological guidelines and is a member of the cultivation associations Bioland and Naturland .

location

The homestead, which has been a listed building since 1998, is about halfway between Kassel-Calden Airport and Immenhausen am Jungfernbach . The Jungfernbach and Brandteich nature reserve near Calden extends south of the homestead .

General information

The 320  hectare large vollarrondierte operation was leased in July 1998 by the University of Kassel and has since been managed according to the guidelines of organic farming. The promotion and further development of organic farming and the creation of jobs in the agricultural and social sectors are central concerns of the project. The domain is intended to be a model for ecologically, economically and socially sustainable management in the region. It is integrated into university research and teaching and at the same time made accessible to the interested public.

Business enterprise

Of the areas of the Hessian state domain Frankenhausen, with an average soil score of 60 (range: 38-87 soil points), the farm currently cultivates 229 ha of the total operational area as arable land and 35.84 ha as grassland. The remaining agricultural area was sublet or made available for experimental purposes.

The company has extensive building capacities, which have been under monument protection since summer 1998 .

A dairy herd with around 100 cows has been built on the domain in recent years. The entire female offspring remains on the farm to supplement the population or for fattening. There are currently four bulls completing the herd of cattle. In 2010 an old building was converted into a winter laying hen house for 700 laying hens . In summer the chickens are in two self-developed mobile stalls on the pasture and the clover grass .

Teaching and Research

For all experimental activities and investigations at the site, a work unit "Experimental organic farming" was established on the Frankenhausen domain. Approx. 20 hectares are available for plant cultivation experiments. Essential for the connection of teaching in the Organic Agriculture course of Faculty 11, but also other courses of study, the University of Kassel and the teaching and experimental farm in Frankenhausen, is the exact collection and continuous registration of various data on agricultural goods. So z. B. the soil-biological, -chemical and -physical parameters, the keeping of field records and stable books, the documentation of the landscape development, the open bookkeeping etc. can be collected and made comprehensible. On the one hand, this data should flow into the corresponding lectures / seminars (e.g. soil science, ecology, business administration) and, on the other hand, should be disclosed during company visits.
