The Franz Sales Haus ( sic ) in the Essen district of Huttrop is a Catholic facility for the disabled . The facade of the old building has been a listed building since 2002.

It has around 1,500 employees at around 40 locations in Essen and offers 2,300 places for care and support for people with intellectual, psychological and multiple disabilities.

history

In 1892 the facility was named after Franz von Sales .

The Franz Sales House was founded on April 3, 1884 by the theologian Peter Beising as an association for the upbringing and care of idiotic Catholic children of both sexes from the Rhine Province . In 1889 the facility was granted legal entity rights by Wilhelm II . Three years later, after moving to its current location on Steeler Strasse, the facility was named after Franz von Sales .

Before the start of the Aktion T4 deportations ( destruction of life unworthy of life, Nazi murders ) in 1940, 1,096 men, women and children lived in the facility. In September 1941, two large transports took place in the two psychiatric clinics Bedburg-Hau and Johannistal-Süchteln (today Süchteln is part of Viersen ), which were connected to the T4 program. The doctor Hans Hegemann in the Franz-Sales-Haus and the opinion of the social workers had an influence on the survival of the disabled people. The parents' political orientation also played a role in the prognoses for their children, as Volker van der Locht demonstrated in his research for the UIC. By 1943 a total of 832 disabled people had been deported.

Since September 1, 1972, the Franz Sales House has been running a two-year vocational training course in cooperation with the Essen Employment Office to improve integration opportunities. The aim was to support disabled young people after leaving school. From 1973 the Franz Sales House supported the initiative “Help for the home child” of the child protection association . As a result, the “contact parents program” was created, which enabled many children to have contacts beyond the Franz Sales House through constant family contact. In 1974 a home counseling center was set up. Psychologists and therapists offered residents and staff, parents and contact parents a point of contact to mediate in conflicts between residents and between residents and staff. At the club meeting on May 10, 1978, the board decided to found the DJK Franz Sales Haus sports club and adopted a founding statute. This meant that children and young people under the age of 18, who had previously been excluded from regular competitions in the Franz Sales Haus company sports club, were also able to participate in the sports activities.

In 1992 the Klosterberghof was recognized as an organic farm. On July 8 of the same year, the Hopfenstrasse outdoor living group in Essen-Schönebeck was set up with eleven dormitory spaces as the first decentralization project for the Franz Sales House. The workshop for the disabled (WfB) , today the main operation of the Franz Sales workshops, was inaugurated on June 10, 1994 by the Essen bishop Hubert Luthe after two years of construction . At the 360 workplaces on Dahlhauser Strasse, the mentally handicapped worked in the areas of landscape maintenance, carpentry, locksmithing, bookbinding, tailoring, electrical assembly, gardening, storage and shipping.

On September 27 of the following year, the Franz Sales House rented the first apartment for the new "Integrative Living" project. The special education school (HEP) of the Franz Sales Vocational College opened on August 21, 1996. In two classes, a total of 48 students were trained as curative educators. In the three-year training, the trainees were taught knowledge in the fields of education, psychiatry, nursing, health studies, law, as well as didactics and methodology. From October onwards, twenty participants with a craft vocational training in another class were able to acquire an additional special educational qualification. It served to instruct and support mentally handicapped people in the workshop for the disabled (WfB).

The Special Olympics Fitness Center was opened on February 18, 1997 in the Franz Sales House. It was the first fitness center in Germany to serve as a training facility for mentally and multiply disabled people. The sponsorship for this facility, which was financed by various sponsors, was taken over by Bundesliga coach Ottmar Hitzfeld .

Two years later, the Franz Sales Haus set up another independent corporate division in addition to the vocational college under the umbrella of the “Franz Sales Schule gGmbH”: the advanced training department. Further training courses and events for different target groups in the field of disabled and elderly care are organized here.

After demolition and renovation work, the topping-out ceremony for the first construction phase of the main building of the Franz Sales House at Steeler Str. 261 was celebrated in 2001. Only the facade of the house built in 1892 remained. On October 16, 2002, the Franz Sales Haus finally founded two subsidiaries: the non-profit Franz Sales Wohnen GmbH and Franz Sales Werkstätten GmbH.

On June 2, 2003, the integration company "In time gGmbH - non-profit company for temporary work" started operations. The subsidiary of the Franz Sales Haus made it possible for people with disabilities to conclude a regular employment contract under collectively regulated conditions. In the same year, the vocational college offered the first training to become a state-certified health care worker.

At the Spelberghof, among other things, riding therapies are offered for people with disabilities.

In 2004 the Franz Sales Haus acquired part of the Spelberghof (20,000 m²) from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The entire yard, which had previously been used by the Essen police rider, was to continue to be used as a riding facility. In addition to the sporty riding business, "therapeutic riding" should now also be offered for disabled people. The horses make it easy for people with and without disabilities to come into contact with one another. On November 11th, after 4½ years of construction, the main building of the Franz Sales House was inaugurated. The reconstructed historical window crown above the entrance portal was used again for the celebrations. In 2004, the range of products offered by Franz Sales Wohnen GmbH was greatly expanded in the outpatient area. The area of outpatient assisted living, which already existed, was supplemented by the family support service (FuD) and the coordination, contact and advice center (KoKoBe). In the same year, a new workshop shop opened at Gemarkenstrasse 76.

In April 2005 the project “Involvement of volunteers and volunteers in helping people to participate in life in the community” (volunteering project), a research project of the German Caritas Association, began . It was supported by " Aktion Mensch " and scientifically accompanied by the "Institute for Civil Society Development" in Freiburg. Thanks to the collaboration with several partners ( Deutsche Telekom , E.ON Ruhrgas AG, RWE , BMV, Helmholtz and Nord-Ost-Gymnasium), more than 140 students and trainees were involved in the project. Also in 2005, the Franz Sales House became the “Ruhr district base”. The disabled sports association of North Rhine-Westphalia sighted players for the national team of people with intellectual disabilities for the 2006 World Cup from April 30th. Since August 2005 the special school of the Franz Sales Haus has been called “Special School with a Focus on Intellectual Development”. A new school profile was developed that provided for changes in the teaching of adult pupils in the work stages, the promotion of severely multi-handicapped pupils and the establishment of further sports groups. The first and second construction phases of the sports center Ruhr of the Franz Sales House (architect: Michael Deterding) were inaugurated on August 31st. The first integrative fitness center in Germany was particularly popular.

Inauguration of the new school building on the grounds of the Franz Sales House.

The new school building was inaugurated on February 21 of the following year. In addition to the Franz Sales Förderschule, the school complex also houses the Franz Sales Schule gGmbH, which offers training and further education for skilled workers in the field of disabled and elderly care. The students can gain experience with mentally handicapped special needs students in educational projects and apply the theoretical knowledge they have acquired in practice. The special needs students benefited from the additional educational offers through the cooperation. From June, the nursery at FS Werkstätten switched the breeding and distribution of plants to " Bioland ". Without using pesticides or insecticides, beneficial insects were used as “biological weapons” for pest control. From summer a new paid social and orientation internship was offered in the Franz Sales House. It was intended to work against the disorientation of young people after leaving school. In 52 weeks, 20 interns per year were able to get to know different company departments in the company. The nationwide first integrative dragon boat race took place on the regatta course at Baldeneysee on August 11th . The DJK sports community of the Franz Sales House organized this race together with “Drachenboot Essen” and the “Essener Sportbund”. Together with other cooperation partners, the Franz Sales Haus hosted another sporting event on September 15th with the small final of the INAS-FID World Cup 2006 for people with disabilities. In the “Am Hallo” sports park, the German team beat South Africa 4-0. On September 23, the 1st integrative open-air music festival in North Rhine-Westphalia took place in front of 1,200 visitors in the Franz Sales Haus. Ten bands played on two stages at the concert organized by the leisure sector.

In 2007, the DJK Franz Sales Haus was officially named a "recognized state performance base in the sport of football" by the Disabled Sports Association of North Rhine-Westphalia (BSNW). From May, the tailoring of the FS-Werkstätten processed a giant poster designed by the artist Otmar Alt on behalf of Ruhrkohle AG , with which the corporate headquarters had been covered. 4,000 bags were made from the 3,500 m² textile fabric and sold in the Mayersche bookstore to support the Ein Herz für Kinder foundation . On May 11th, the farm shop on the Klosterberghof was able to reopen. Since then, the 84 m² shop has been selling organic food alongside the farm's own products. On July 1st the “Center for Job Orientation” (ZfJ) started in the field of labor market integration. Adults who have difficulties looking for a job due to disabilities or a long period of lack of professional experience will be placed in internship positions in the Franz Sales House for six months after an aptitude analysis. Another project started on August 1st in the field of labor market integration, the BIN IM BERUF project. It is intended to enable high-performance students from Essen's special schools (including the Franz Sales special school) with a focus on intellectual development to find a job on the primary labor market after a 15-month internship.

The expansion of the Ruhr sports center was completed with the opening of the new facilities.

A year later the association DJK Franz Sales Haus e. V. expand its range of sports: the blind and visually impaired could play blind football in the Ruhr sports center . In 2008 the integrative cultural project “Mal different” started. In cooperation with artists and cultural institutions from the region, participants could, for example, design sculptures, take part in music projects, play theater, experiment with digital photography or attend a lecture group. The measure “DIA-AM” (diagnosis of the employability of particularly affected disabled people) for people in the border area between intellectual and learning disabilities began on July 1st. On behalf of the Employment Agency , the Franz Sales House diagnosed participants from Essen , Oberhausen , Gelsenkirchen and Duisburg as to whether and to what extent there was potential for employment in the general labor market. The DJK Franz Sales Haus eV celebrated its 30th birthday on September 7th, 2008 on the occasion of a game and sports festival with the Essen police. More than 1,400 internal and external members drove in the first integrative sports center in Germany, Ruhr Sport. On October 21st, the “lighthouse”, a curative-psychiatric outpatient clinic, was opened. In cooperation with the Rheinische Kliniken Essen , Franz Sales Wohnen GmbH offers children and young people with a mental handicap and psychological impairments medical care, diagnostics and advice. A curative teacher, a psychologist and a doctor in child and adolescent psychiatry work in the lighthouse.

On April 3, 2009, the facility celebrated its 125th anniversary under the motto "Franz Sales House - 125 Years of MitMenschen". The ceremony in the Philharmonie, which NRW Prime Minister Jürgen Rüttgers also attended, was preceded by a solemn pontifical office in the Essen Cathedral Church. The second construction phase of the Sports Center Ruhr was inaugurated on June 30th by Auxiliary Bishop Ludger Schepers : The sports facilities, which were completed in 2005 and were well received by residents of the surrounding districts, were replaced by a swimming pool (16.66 × 8 m), a large sports hall (15 × 27 m) with 200 spectator spaces and two artificial turf outdoor courts specially equipped for blind football (22 × 44 m and a small soccer field). In September, the Franz Sales House began an integration project with academic support from the University of Duisburg-Essen and the Evangelical University of Applied Sciences in Bochum, which was supposed to facilitate the integration of people with disabilities in regular sports clubs. The reaction of the sports clubs in Essen was positive after an initial evaluation by the integration officer of the Franz Sales House: More than 450 sports clubs could imagine an integrative offer in their club. On November 18, 2009 Pope Benedict XVI honored the director of the Franz Sales House, Günter Oelscher, with the award "Knight of the Order of Gregory" . It is one of the highest recognitions given by the Catholic Church to lay people. He was honored for his services in the field of handicapped assistance because he not only campaigned in the Franz Sales House for the needs of people in need of support, but also advocated fair solutions in committees and with authorities across the region in relation to the living conditions of people with intellectual disabilities . In the area of labor market integration, another measure will start on October 26th, which was carried out on behalf of the Employment Agency . The "Individual Company Qualification" (InbeQ) was aimed at people in the border area between learning and intellectual disabilities, who should be prepared for employment relationships subject to compulsory insurance.
