Erected in the Bauhaus style in 1931 under the direction of the Essen architect Hermann Finger , the architects Ernst Knoblauch and Eberhard Haakshorst introduced changes after the Second World War . In the 1980s, the mourning hall fell into disrepair due to a leaky roof and groundwater damage in the basement. As a result, it was completely renovated within eight months in 2000.
