The Jewish merchant Gustav Blum (1879–1935) had the building built in 1928 as a textile department store. He had around 600 employees. In 1938 his sons were forced by the National Socialists to sell the business below value in the course of the Aryanization . Then the Loosen department store was located there between 1938 and 1989. The original ceramic relief facade of the house, built in 1912, was largely removed in 1934 because it was converted into a Gauwirtschaft building. After the Second World War and while the war damage was being repaired, the house was used as an administration building for the employment office. West Möbel moved in in 1961 and stayed there until 1993. Today an office of the Arbeiterwohlfahrt (Essen district association) and a branch of the Sparkasse Essen are housed here. Georg Metzendorf designed the building in the New Objectivity style for the Sparkasse headquarters. Until 1985 it was used by the Association of House of Technology , the Kramm furniture store and the Eintracht department store, among others . The house, located south of the Grillo Theater , was converted into a theater passage with upscale retail in 1985. Another modernization took place in 2005.
